Graphic pics: Generator fumes kill man, wife & 3 children in Ikorodu

Generator fumes has killed a man, his wife and all his 3 children in Ipoyewa community of Ikorodu, Lagos. The bodies of the family was discovered by neighbours last Friday September 12th in their home. All five suffocated to death after inhaling fumes from a generator which they'd kept in their room. According to neighbours, the man bought the generator just two days before the unfortunate incident and was afraid it will be stolen if left outside so he kept it inside his 2-room apartment.

When the family failed to come out late Friday morning, a neighbour peeped through their window, saw bodies, and alerted others. They broke down the door to discover the horror. And when I say horror, I mean horror. The photos are really graphic so please be warned.

Residents of the community are blaming the family's deaths on lack of power in the area. They claim the last time they had light was 3 years ago, that every house in the area uses a generator. They said they have called on the government many times to help them with light but their efforts have yielded no fruit

Keeping generators outside can never be over emphasized in this country, i don't know how some people still don't that it kills, with so many past incidents around the country. You bring in your generator after turning it off. may their souls rest in peace and may others learn.

  106. OMG...This is really sad. People need education about the dangers of generator fumes indeed. SMH

We need oxygen to stay alive. And its the blood that carries oxygen to various parts of the body. Generator fumes contain a dangerous gas (carbon monoxide). This gas is colourless and odourless. When inhaled, it binds to the blood instead of oxygen binding to the blood. When this happens, the blood carries it to all parts of the body. Repeated inhalation leads to death.
NB: Vehicle fumes contain this dangerous gas as well.

  126. They died from carbon monoxide poisoning leading to lack of oxygen for the body's use. This has been a sad, recurring problem in the nation for years. Many are not educated on the implications of having electric generating sets within their rooms. There should be constant health education at the wards and local government levels on this problem! Every local government has a health department headed by a supervising counsellor. There should be a regular health warning on TV, radio, newspapers etc. Even with these sets outside the houses emitting so much fumes, what are the long-term health implications?

    ReplyDelete
  127. All the people who are involve in the electrical black out in Nigeria must suffer a million times more of these type of problem AMEN.

  150. Generators are not supposed to be in the room, they release carbon monoxide which combines with haemoglobin to form a more stable compound than oxygen does. It is also odorless, so these people would have died in their sleep not knowing they were dieing at all. This is why education is important, so unfortunate.

  162. Generator fumes contain CO (carbon monoxide) this combines with the little oxygen in the room and forms CO2 and then they were inhaling the CO2 which was like breathing in the same gas that they were breathing out.... So sad! It would have been better if the generator was stolen. Lord please help my country....
