Photos: Doctors, students, protest mass sack of resident doctors

Medical doctors, students, consultants converged at the Lagos University Teaching hospital, (LUTH), Idi Araba, today to protest the recent sack of 16,000 resident doctors by the Federal Government. The protest was led by the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Dr. Tope Ojo.

The doctors said their strike was never about an increase in their salary, that all they were fighting for was for better structures and equipment in hospitals across the country. See more photos after the cut

Some of the placards are just a comic relief! Lol. But seriously, sack will not resolve the issue. If truely they are fighting a good cause, then the FG should come to terms with them. Dialogue remains the best tool for difficult situations. MB.C DORIS

Jonathan's government is definitely the worst Nigerian govt pro democracy. He's just very incompetent with the worst advisers. From removing fuel subsidy to nationwide strikes, the economy is definitely going downhill and poverty has never been more prominent. He shouldn't even bother contesting next year.

I am a doctor and all my professional life, I've braved several health hazards to treat people. I've offered free medical care, services, consultations etc to many. Some, friends; some, family; some, acquaintances; some, people I never knew. Even those who I never saw. Its 5 days after the government issued a directive for our sack (over 16,000 doctors), how many of you have called me or sent a message to either enquire if I was affected or to sympathise/empathise with me. Sadly some of those ones who I so cared for have said it's good that we (doctors) have been sacked. Let it be on record that doctors are not responsible for the poor state of our health sector. We all know who is. Rather, as doctors we strive daily to give our best to you while being severely limited by a dysfunctional envirinment set up by extraneous forces. I hope one day, you all will understand and see the truth in our struggles as doctors for a better health sector for all Nigerians (you and I)".#SaveTheNigerianDoctors.

These people still don't know the name of the game. When they start thinking intelligently then things would turn around for them.
Case in point, going on a protest...the first action that government would have thought they would do. Instead of doing something that would confuse them they just played into their hands again. I am watching to see how far it would go.

Hold on a minute! I thought half of their 24 demands was to subdue the other healthcare workers, i am not seeing that on their placards? Whatever....

Till they learn to play this game they are going to be on the losing end.

I'm with you guys. I don't know if it's Jonathan or it's the politians around him that are incompetent or lack the knowledge on how to lead a country in this 21st century. His response to medical personnels who are on strike and are protesting not for increase in salary but for better infrastructure and equipment is not of this 21st century. We don't need all this old brains that fail to upgrade and update as our leaders.

This time i support d govt on this sack please, its now a norm, every year doctors are striking some times even 2 or 3 x in the year, some times its a state strike other times federal, Haba!!! pple are dieing and dey don't care, even with the ebola wahala they refuse to end the strike, isn't there some sort of oat they take that says there responsibility is to 1st save a life????? since they enjoy staying at home they should enjoy d sack, dey want to sit at home and receive their salary in the name of strike, mtchewwww

I thought Doctors were smarter than this.
The ultimate PR point would have been to temporarily suspend their strike when the Ebola scourge broke out in the country. But alas, they stoneheartedly continued, and in the process lost the public sympathy for their fight.
It's hard not to side with the FG now.

These doctors protesting are shameless people. Why are they now lying instead of projecting the true reason why they are striking. Nigerians must know the truth. These doctors are selfish, greedy and wicked. I hail the president for his decision, as they always they can hold the government to ransom.

Anonymous said...

For everybody blaming the doctors I think you should think twice, if you think they are fighting for themselves you are wrong. Going through those pictures I could see the best student in my class back in medical school along side other colleagues protesting too, they have all lost their jobs.He was so good that he got a into training immediately yet I was not that good but now I am practising in the UK making 10 times of whatever he could make. The truth is that most of these doctors have options, all they need to do is to decide to leave but they chose to stay because they believe in Nigeria, because of this same masses who don't even share their cause nor have any sympathy for them. In a country where the budget of Aso rock clinic is more than that of LUTH you people should know we are in trouble, they are asking for Universal health coverage for you, they are asking that hospitals should be equipped for your use, they are asking that their training should be improved so that they can give you (the masses) the best, they are asking that their hazard allowance be increase from five thousand naira so that in case they get Ebola or hepatitis B while treating you they can leave something behind for their family. personally I blame them because they made their choice and they chose to stay even when they knew that there is no future.

Anonymous said...

why is it that it's only Nigerian doctors that are exposed to hazards? d nurses and lab scientists aren't hun? they want to be in charge of administration and every depts in the hospital.nobody is the most important in the hospital as they need each other to work perfectly. Nigerian doctors especially should stop undermining the other health care workers. This strike is centered on supriority, who is the most important and who should be in charge;which doesn't make sense to me. I am not a health care worker hence am not siding anybody but when you hear the doctors state their demands, you can't just help but wonder.i have a doctor friend who told me what their demands are and that it must be met before they call off the strike and salary is the lest important though it is stated.Govt.and doctors should dialogue and reach a conclusion putting all relevant parties into consideration.

Anonymous said...

All the health workers in the federal hospitals are collecting thesame 5000 naira. If the doctors wanted to proof that they are truelly the head, they are suppose to fight for others not being selfish. When the ASUU fought, others benefited from it. Linder ,if u like use this coment 4 ur lunch as u always does.

the idiots saying they should all be sacked and there are other ppl that would do the job… what other ppl tho?? the quack doctors that didn't even complete 4 years of medical school??? whose lives would be at stake tho…. the government sacked ppl that treat u day in day out and you're happy, the same government officials that can afford to go abroad to get treated… did y'all even think who is going to suffer at the end of the day??? i understand it's ridiculous for doctors to go on strike, but in a country where they are ridiculously under appreciated, what do u expect…. this right here is why i can't practice in Nigeria… I'm not paying 6 years of medical school fees to come and be insulted

Its so sad that some of you nigerians chose to blame the doctors in this situation. Doctors go on strike for a better cause , whether its for an increase in salary or for better equipments and working environments and u people complain.
1. Do you know that we are presently in the 1980's / 1990's medically in nigeraia. Things the world did 30 years ago is what we are doing now. We are way behind in every thing and you ppl blame doctors!!!!!

2.The average salary of a doctor in the U.S is between $80,000 - $100,000 a year! (Which translates to about one million a month), And our doctors earn N200,000 a month and they are fighting for their rights and u complain, when your govt. officials carry all the money abroad for treatment. Why not invest that money in the health system?

3. The average call room for doctors is a terrible sight. I wouldnt even put ny bag down in such a room for fear of carrying some disease home.

4. If u have ever pbeen in a government ward or the accident and emergency area of a government hospital, u would shut up and not criticise their strike. Those place stink like crazy, sometimes patients lie on the floor(esp in the A&E ) because there are no beds. The toilets are even worse and worst of all, they lack equipment to handle very simple situations. They have to result to crude CAVEMAN ways to treat patients.

5. They dont have any form of protection/ security.
I have seen angry relatives of patients physically and verbally assault doctors, nurses and even cleaners in govt host. Some because the couldnt get bed spaces, some because they feel the healthcare professionals arent doing enough for the patient and others just because they are angry. Its happens a lot and the govt. hasnt done much to help this situation.

6. They are over worked and under payed!!!!!! And i mean over over over worked!!!

I HAVE SEEN ALL OF THIS FIRST HAND!!!! and its horrible but because of the love of their jobs, most of them wake up daily and out on a smile and go to work.
You people dont know the half of it!!! Just pray you never have to go there or take any one u know there.

Fight the right people and for the right cause. These doctors just want a better deal and the govt is totally worng for sacking them all. When u sack them, who will go back to treat the millions of sick people in the country, the government is just using this BULLYING tactic to get the doctors to bend to their will.

FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT CAUSE PEOPLE!!!

MY SOLUTION TO THE CONFLICT IN THE HEALTH SECTOR

I heard the a few weeks ago that other health practitioners like the Lab scientist and Nurses have taken the Doctors to court over the issue of who becomes the Chief Medical Officer of a hospital, and also Doctors do not want other health practitioners to be called consultants.

If we want a permanent solution to this problem that is eating up our health sector, I suggest that every hospital should have a hospital administrator as the head of the hospital, the chief medical officer should be the head of Doctors, Nurses should have their head, Lab scientist should have their head, as well as other health practitioners. If need be hospital administration should be introduced as a course in our higher institution just as we have educational administration and hotel management. If someone puts me in front of President Goodluck Jonathan or the judge that will decide on their case, this will be my humble suggestion.

I am presently giving personal development talks in secondary schools and I found out that all the schools doing very well have a school administrator as the head of the school as against the school principal. A school administrator has been trained on how to properly manage a school, he or she knows how to co-ordinate every aspect of a school to meet the school goals. Most principals were teachers and they only know who is a good teacher and also the school curriculum but the principal does not know every detail of administration which is why schools with school administrators as their head do very well.

Our hospitals will also run very well if we allow hospital administrators to head our hospitals. All health practitioners should concentrate on their job and work in one accord, respect one another and see one another as colleagues. Any health practitioner that also have a good administrative knowledge perhaps through training or experience can also be made the hospital administrator.

No profession is better than others; we are all serving the society. As a Teacher, I will tell you teaching is the best profession because without Teachers all of us will be in darkness. But without Doctors, some of us would be dead today. Without Lab Scientist, Doctors will not know the exact problem that a sick person has.

Secondly I do not support that doctors’ salary should be higher, if you decide to be a doctor and you spend seven years in school, it is your choice. It does not mean your profession is better than others. To me, Teachers should earn the highest salary, but if that cannot be done, once you are a level 8 officer in government organization whether NNPC or any Parasatal , Ministry, Security agency, everyone should earn same salary. A situation where Army and Civil defense (that started yesterday) earn more than police, how can the police be motivated? This disparity should stop, I beg. If you are a fresh graduate and you are in level 8, as a civil or public servant, the salary should be same.

Thirdly, how can doctors say other health practitioners cannot be called Consultants. Who is a Consultant? A person whose occupation is to be consulted for their expertise. If you are an expert in your field you can be called a consultant.
Now medical doctors have been sacked. I think all stake holders should go back to the drawing table and agree on the way forward to the health sector. Doctors should be restored but they must be told their limits.

Thank you Mr president for this one, Selfish group of people...selfish driven strike.

Comparing the US to Nigeria? do u guys actually think u are a rich nation to be able to offer all this guys are asking ? we are not rich lets face it.Now the major buyer of the only oil we depend on stopped buying. We are struggling to keep that economy running. Doctors are asking for two much, be happy with what you have, doctors in Russia earn 200 dollars monthly, Russia is an extremely rich nation, major suppler of gas to Europe, they manufacture ammunition, war planes all sort of things.Resident doctors are paid, yet they are not contended in Nigeria. Gov should stop paying, doctors should pay to undergo their residency . Is not like the money gov has paid would be gotten back from their salaries. What is the gov benefiting anyway?.In d US, when a doctor picks a job after graduating, u pay bk to the govt every single penny the gov paid to the doctor wt interest. And this doctors are very wicked, all they care about is money, was this the oat u took in school?if they wanted to millions, they should have chosen a career in business.
