A visit by the News Agency of Nigeria to some hospitals in Lagos
Metropolis showed that nurses and other health workers, including
cleaners were seen wearing face mask and gloves while attending to

some of the health facilities were compelling patients to wash their
hands and apply sanitisers before proceeding into their building.
Some of the hospitals visited included Jaycee Hospital, Prime Hospital, Lifeline Children’s Hospital and Providence Hospital.
A Neurologist at Jaycee Hospital, Dr. Francis Ojini, told NAN that his hospital did not attend to patients who had with fever.
Ojini said that it became necessary as health workers were at greater risk of contracting the virus.
“Health
workers are the first to be in contact with patients who visited the
hospital and so it is necessary we take precautions.
“For
now, any illness that has to do with fever is not being attended to as
we are trying to be careful because of the new development of the Ebola
disease.
“If
there is need, we refer patients we feel we cannot treat. We hope we
are able to curtail the spread in order to save lives,” he said.
A
nurse at the same hospital, who pleaded anonymity, said that nurses
wore facemask and gloves when any patients visited the facility.
He said: “We are protecting ourselves from contracting a deadly disease that has no drug or vaccine at the moment.”
Allso
speaking, the Medical Director, Lifeline Children’s Hospital, Dr. Uche
Owowo, said that his hospital was making hand sanitisers available for
patients.
Owowo
urged the Federal Government and other civil organisations to intensify
awareness programmes to educate the masses about the disease.
“Many people still need to know more about the disease, how it can be contracted and how to prevent being infected.
“I believe educating people and making the facilities available and accessible will encourage people to be cautious,” he said.
Efforts
to speak with the medical directors and other health workers of Prime
Hospital and Providence Hospital proved abortive as they refused to
comment.

I pray this virus is eradicated before it reaches the stage where people will wear masks and gloves or even hazmat suit before entering buses,going to places of worship,market etc will require people wearing masks and gloves..

I think a patients should be quarantined, either they show sign of fever or not, because the virus might be in a patients or a person might be infected but have not started showing symptoms probably its still in the incubation period

Big shame. So if you have fever and no medical attention, you simply go home and spread d disease, since the health workers have refused to attend to you.Please isolate and test for ebola immediately and eliminate ebola and attend to patients. Its a shame that we are literate, but we cannot use our literacy. The patients if they really have ebola will go and spread it at home. If they they like it or not, the health workers will contact it if it starts spreading through that means. Chikena.

●Am an astute observer of the Principle of Cause
and Effect....Nothing happens for no just cause!
●I see the arrival of Ebola into Nigeria as a big
Conspiracy Theory
●Why would a man that ought to be quarantined or
put on surveillance when it was suspected that he
could be infected with EVD allowed to leave the
country and board a lagos bound plane
●Before boarding the plane, CCTV camera
captured Mr Sawyer writhing in excruciating pain
● Apparently overtaken by “excruciating pain,” he,
at a point, laid flat on his stomach on the floor in
the corridor of the
airport.
●He wore a sad countenance, suggestive that he
was seriously sick
●His actions plainly shows that he did not make
bodily contact with anybody, he sat alone from the
rest of the boarding passengers and also decline
an hand from an unsuspecting airport official
●The question then is why would Liberia airport
official allow such a visibly sick man board a plane?

policy clear him to travel to Nigeria for a
conference when he was on surveillance

Linda, where is the video showing Patrick Sawyer at the airport in Liberia? It apparently shows that he avoided touching other passengers and officials at the airport before boarding. Which leads me to believe he knowingly brought the disease to Nigeria. Why do you think that is? Does he have a previous bad history with Nigeria or someone in Nigeria that we do not know about? Is he an enemy of Nigeria? If he was avoiding touching people in Liberia and then vomited and urinated on staff in Nigeria then it shows his intentions were deliberate. I think the Nigerians that were infected by him should sue Liberia, the Liberian officials and Patrick Sawyer's surviving family.

Now I am a bit scared..this is not a good time to fall sick in lagos..I was at the international airport on friday and I saw fear written on peoples face..patience ozokwor and her son(I had no idea she has a tall black son) who just returned from the uk, were both tested..so libers this is no time to joke with your health at all.watch what you eat and drink.I reckon you go get some few drugs just incase.I hope we get through it sooner than later.
shouldn't there be designated hospitals where people with the disease can go? someone needs to sue one hospital for a ridiculous sum some day so that they will realize they took an oath! haba! the negligence in our health sector is too bad.

My thoughts exactly. These people are trained to be "professional" health workers & even before they got certified,I'm sure they knew what they were probably getting into but look what we have here. What's wrong with us Nigerians pls? Fear is natural human emotion,no doubt but it's really stupid to me when "professionals" leave innocent people to their fates because of their selfish fears. That's so unprofessional. Now,it's clear that most Nigerians only do jobs to get salaries (like slaves) rather than out of commitment or love.

The disease hasn't spread in Lagos. Fashola was able to bundle them before it went any further, and i applaud him for it. Now, we all go about our normal lives, until a new outbreak springs forth *hopefully NOT*
We all know Ebola is a scary disease but nevertheless, we should always try to get concrete information about individuals and hospitals before quoting unnecessarily.

i Think those hospitals rejecting patient with FEVER are really stupid, i know everyone is trying to protect him/herself, but looking at it from another angle, we are not really protected if we don't know who is infected, because its not only in the hospitals we can contact the disease, if you reject those with fever and they turn out to be infected then the chance of everyone else getting infected continue increasing. But since you already know how to protect yourself from such, why not conduct a test and if the result turn out to be EBOLA contact the AGENCY in charge and handle him/her over to them. its risky but its far better than turning them down..the EARLIER we identify people with the VIRUS the BETTER for us all..Linda if you like post my comment.
Health workers have every right to be afraid. 1 case(sawyer) in one hospital nd abt 6 healthworkers infected. Dis ppl have families nd loved ones. Becomin a dr or a nurse is to save lives, yes! bt nt at d cost of your own live or d lives of ur loved ones.

private hospitals in Lagos do not have the capabilities to manage ebola cases...
once a suspected ebola patient enters your hospital, that hospital is shut down till further notice...
the government has designated centres for people with high fever to go get tested
thus, taking in a possible ebola patient (high grade fever is usually the first symptom hence the hospitals use the infra-red thermometers to take temperature) is a VERY HIGH RISK to other patients in the hospital cos ebola is not detected immediately but only suspected...ny the time, the test result comes back, you cannot tell how many people the person could have contacted within the hospital setting...
its not just about preventing infection to healthworkers but this is the wisest thing to do to do to control the disease
